bas-relief
Relief – is sometimes refered to as bas-relief and in turn refered to as relief in a chosen medium, (ie clay-relief, fibre-relief, soap stone-relief) I work in plaster and mixed media relief – it is all a form of sculpture.
Bas-relief has less depth and an extreme foreshortening, when measured proportionately in scale to traditional sculpture. This technique retains the natural contours of figures and landscapes and allows the viewer to look at the medium without loosing perspective or form.
I discovered an interest to this form when I met Canadian clay-relief artist Richard Gill from Ontario. I took a weekend workshop with him in 2015 which solidified my attraction to the media.
